This is a great calender program that is very small and
has a little memory footprint. I am not the author, I
just love the program. You can set your own holidays
for display and print out a yearly calender. It is
totally user-configurable from the way you want the
weeks displayed to the colors that they are displayed
in. It is also FREE. Get this one!

Subject: [*] Detect New Volume - Display volume's message-of-the-day
What: Detect a new mounted volume and "double-click" at a
document/application (if found) at a "standard" location on that volume
What for: telling the user (a student) what's new on some particular
volume and/or how to use it. The document "clicked" by the
present WatchVol program may be a text document about what's new
on the volume. Or it may be any application that somehow prepares
the student how to use the (file server) volume, whenever the
volume is mounted.
Hot points: Dynamic (transient) patch of the system: doesn't require
restarting the system, gets uninstalled when the application
quits.
Contents:
WatchVol - Application (watchdog) itself
Watch MountVol.pi - project and resource files to build it
Watch MountVol.pi.rsrc
WatchMount.cc - Source code of the main module (C++)
launcher.cc - Launches an application-creator given FSSpec of
the document/application
MountVol init.pi - project to compile an Init (not INIT!) code
resource that patches the system on-the-fly
MountVol init.c - Source code of the _MountVol interceptor
(assembly inlined into a dummy C program)
The source code contains enough (I hope) comments to show what
a particular piece of code does, as well as some tricks involved
Language: Symantec C/C++ 6.0 and built-in Assembler
System: System 7.x, uses AppleEvents. Tested on IIsi, IIci,
Quadras and Centres.
Patching the system: _MountVol system trap is patched when the application
starts up. The patch is removed (i.e., the trap is restored to
its original state) when the application quits.
How to run: place the application into your "Startup Items" folder;
the application quits when it receives a "QUIT" event, or
when it's in the foreground and any keyboard key is pressed.
Note: the source code uses a "standard" environment, see myenv-notify.cpt
For completeness, the library and the .h file are included as a separate
CompactPro archive. However, they (complete with the source code)
can be found at various archive sites under the name 'myenv-notify'

Subject: [*] NSF Forms Templates updated
For people who still submit NSF grant proposals on paper:
Here are revised Nat'l Science Foundation proposal form templates
incorporating changes in the new Grant Proposal Guide. These replicas,
constructed in MS Word and MS Excel, are cleaner, faster, and easier than
typing on photocopied paper forms. Microsoft Word 4.0/Excel 3.0 or higher
are needed, plus a laser or 300-dpi ink jet printer.
Changes:
-- Templates are updated or added to match the NSF Grant Proposal Guide,
(GPG) dated 2/94.
-- All forms in the Grant Proposal Kit are included except the "Information
about PI's/PD's."
-- The forms now work properly with all standard Mac configurations.
-- On color monitors, the templates are displayed in two colors to more
easily distinguish between your data and the form.
-- Style sheets have been cleaned up and and simplified for easier
modification.
-- The NSF-UNOLS Ship Time Request Form has an .eps version with a READABLE
map.
-- The budget pages include new macros to automatically format the forms to
handle TrueType or PostScript fonts. The correct format can be selected
during the setup process or after the fact by choosing a menu command.
-- A macro fix is included for the insidious bug that sometimes leaves a
blank in Line L of the Cumulative page.
By the way, I'm keeping a list of other known templates for research
proposals. Please email me if you know of others. So far:
NIH templates by John Livesey, available now at ftp.u.washington.edu in
/pub/user-supported/templates.
NASA Budget Form and Army Research Organization forms by Eric Bruce Cohen.
His drafts look terrific and are available at goofy.cs.umd.edu. He expects
to post finished versions to the Mac archives before the end of the
semester.
Coming soon:
-- NSF Antarctic Proposal Worksheets by Judeene Blankenship, Univ. of
Texas, are in progress, will be posted to info-mac, umich, and ut/microlib.
-- Windows version of these forms may soon be available. A knowledgeable
and intrepid user at u.washington is planning to convert them. Let's wish
him luck!

This file contains a PASSENGER TRAIN font and a FREIGHT TRAIN font.
Both fonts are PostScript and are compatible with each other. These

Please replace ppc.basic2.9b0.sit.hqx with ppc.basic2.9b2.sit.hqx .
Version 2.9b2 fixes a static text bug when running under virtual memory.
*ppc_chipbasic 2.9b2 README*
Every *real* personal computer should come with a BASIC interpreter.
Here's my contribution for the new Power Macintosh machines. It's a
line number based BASIC interpreter similar to the Applesoft BASIC that
came with the Apple ][+ (that's Apple ][, *NOT* Mac II for you
newcomers). This version runs ONLY on Power Macs.
Chipmunk Basic is a simple Basic interpreter for the Macintosh. It is
similar to the line number based MumbleSoft BASIC interpreters of circa
1980. Its roots are from a pascal program, basic.p, that was part of
the test input suite to p2c, a pascal to c translator. Both basic.p
and p2c should be in the net.sources archives somewhere (I no longer
have copies). I cleaned up the translated source, ported it to the Mac
and added some Mac specific features.
Chipmunk Basic 2.9 is being distributed as freeware (but only for those who
don't believe that using the BASIC language causes brain damage. :-)
Please note that there are far better versions of BASIC available
commercially. Just none that run PowerPC native and are available for
the Mac as of March 14th.
Version 2.9b2 fixes a static text bug when running under virtual memory.
This program is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but
WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; not even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY
or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

Subject: [*] Voodoo 1.5; a version control tool
To all of you who need version control,
I am glad to inform you that version 1.5 of Voodoo can been
released now. Here is a short overview of the most important changes:
For Voodoo newcomers:
Voodoo (the name stands for Versions Of Outdated Documents Organized
Orthogonally) is a version control tool for the simple and clear
management of projects in which files are created in numerous versions
(variants and revisions). Since Voodoo is capable of managing
arbitrary files, the program can be employed for more than just the
organization of software projects in a narrow sense (program
development). Even the writing of a book, for example, is a project in
which multiple elementary building blocks (the individual chapters,
illustrations, etc.) evolve in various revisions. Using Voodoo can
also pay off here.
Voodoo allows both variant and revision control, and it
manages not only variants and revisions of single files, but
of a whole software project (multi files, multi users,
multi variants, access rights, ...).
The tool offers a neat graphical user interface and is not only
suitable for mere source code control but can handle all
different kinds of files with amazing compression rates:
typical size of delta between arbitrary files
5% (in words: five per cent) !!!!
no matter whether the files are plain text or any other
documents - e. g. MSWord, WriteNow, Canvas, FileMaker ...).
Contrary, if you try to manage non-text-files with Projector
or SCCS you will not get any space reduction.
Voodoo differs from previous source code control systems in its
orthogonal approach to version management. This means that for
every component of a project hierarchy you can not only store
its revision history but also different variants of the same
component. The orthogonal organization of revisions and
variants leads to a much clearer organization that with other
RCS/SCCS-based tools like Projector/SourceServer and others.
A lite version of Voodoo is being distributed on a shareware basis (30 $).
The package included contains VoodooLite 1.5 together with a
readme document and a manual.
Changes since version 1.4:
+ The most important change is one you may not even notice. All operations
modifying the project files are now based on a transaction mechanism
to ensure absolute data integrity, even in the case of a power failure
during an operation.
You might notice that the operations proceed a bit slower now, but
you should gladly grant Voodoo these seconds to ensure
the total security of your files.
+ The dialogs for storing or fetching multiple components now show the
number of components checked/total.
+ The logon dialog is now suppressed in the case that there is only one
user within the project (the administrator) and this user has set no
password.
+ some minor changes and bug fixes.
+ added an index menu to the online manual.

volume and/or how to use it. The document "clicked" by the
present WatchVol program may be a text document about what's new
on the volume. Or it may be any application that somehow prepares
the student how to use the (file server) volume, whenever the
volume is mounted.
Hot points: Dynamic (transient) patch of the system: doesn't require
restarting the system, gets uninstalled when the application
quits.
How to run: place the application into your "Startup Items" folder;
the application quits when it receives a "QUIT" event, or
when it's in the foreground and any keyboard key is pressed.

Subject: 2 Questions from Dieder Bylsma
I am forwarding the following two questions for Dieder Bylsma
who is off for a semester in Paris. Please send replies
directly to him at 73773.3262@CompuServe.COM
First Question:
Playing with the new PowerPC's such as the 6100/60 and the 7100/66 and running
Speedometer, reveals some interesting info. Such as that it thinks it is
running
on a Power Macintosh Centris 610 with no FPU and a 68020 CPU! As well, running
the tests of Speedometer provides the result that it is still slower than a
Q800, but only just slightly. Now wasn't the CPU that was supposed to be
emulated supposed to be a 68030 or a 68040?
Second Question:
Given a PB100, why is it that on occasion it completely forgets that it has an
internal disk drive? Using such utilities as Silverlining, SCSI disk-probe
shows
an absolute zero for hd's on the SCSI disk chain despite the fact that the scan
powers up the SCSI disk? No matter what I do, even so drastic as to unplug and
remove all the batteries, press the interupt and restart switches
simultaneously
for 20 seconds, and so on, I can't get the HD to be recognized or even accessed
at all, other than power being provided to it? Using SCSI disk-mode cables, the
<1 disk symbol will go across (SCSI disk symbol 1) the screen and the drive
will
be powered up. But still, unplugging the cable results in no recognition of the
HD. The *only* way to get the HD to be recognized is to use the SCSI disk-mode
of the PB100 with a desktop macintosh and suddenly the disk is recognized by
both computers! Why? Is there a way to reproduce this miracle cure without
having to use another Mac? Macs are hard to come by at the moment, so plugging
n the computer into these desktop macs is an infrequent option. Any
suggestions, explanations would be greatly appreciated!

Subject: [Q] Word 5.1 and Extended Postscript
Hi,
I have on many occasions printed a regular postscript file by opening it in
Word and setting the style to postscript and then just printing.
I recently received several files that Word insists on converting from
EPS. I presume that the EPS files are extended postscript, is that accurate?
My problem is that when Word is finished 'converting' the file all that
appears in the window is some of the % header info. If I try and print
the file all I get is some blank pages.
Can Word handle EPS files? Is there a trick to it. I am further confused
because one of the files was supposedly created with Word for Windows.
I am using a PowerBook 165 with 7.1 and Word 5.1a.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks.

Subject: As Apple has sown, so shall they reap - the tools mess
As of today, there are NO shrink-wrapped PowerPC apps
at Fry's, Computerware, Computer Attic, Egghead, or the Stanford
Bookstore. That's here in Silicon Valley, a local call from Cupertino.
Despite all the hype from Apple, that is the reality.
Considering that Power PCs have been in the hands of developers
for at least six months, this is suprising. But it's not suprising when
you look at the tools situation. During the last six months, we've
had the Bedrock debacle, the death and re-animation of MacApp, the
Symantec C++ mess, the ETO ripoff, and now, the discovery that
Think C 6.0 won't run on PPC.
Apple let the tools situation deteriorate. Only a few months ago,
Apple was urging developers to migrate to Symantec's tools. Remember?
MPW C++ was allowed to get years behind (it's still based on the ancient
AT&T Cfront 2.0). Then when Symantec blew it, the fallback positions
were weak. All this happened just as Windows really took off, and
many Mac products were converted to Windows or simply abandoned.
Apple didn't provide a painless migration path to PPC for developers.
And now they must suffer for it. PPC may well fail in the market
because of this.

I'd recommend buying one hub, e.g., Focus Enhancements TurboStar ~$500, and
connecting your three LANs to it. If you are using Apple brand LocalTalk
connectors you will need three adapters also (cheap). The distances you
describe are not very long as networks go, and the traffic you describe sounds
pretty light so you don't need Ethernet.

Yesterday I reported a Quadra 840av that went belly up with what
appeared to be a hardware error. (Sad Mac icon on boot, hex numbers
on the screen.) I am happy to report that the problem is now cured--
and it wasn't hardware.
It was partly user error (little old me) and partly Apple CD problem.
Apparently the Apple Support Briefing CD on the PowerPC has corrupted
boot tracks. When I rebooted the Quadra, the CD-ROM was not ejected
(why, I don't know). When the 840av restarted it looked (God knows why) to
the CD ROM, saw the bad boot tracks and died. The CD ROM with
the defective boot tracks was manufactured by Apple! For shame! :-(

Egads - why would you want to do this? Using double-monitors is
one of the most productivity enhancing things you can do on the
Mac, since you can easily have multiple windows on different
screens and that sort of thing. I won't buy a Mac that I can't
easily put two monitors on.
However, if you have your heart set on this, perhaps a simple
solution is best. In the Monitors control panel, arrange the
two monitors so they only touch in a corner - that leaves a one
pixel doorway. Then just turn the SE/30 monitor all the way
black with the brightness knob.

Unfortunately, what you're doing wrong is using Delphi. Eudora does
not work with Delphi at all, either in MacTCP mode or in CommToolbox
mode because Delphi doesn't use standard POP/SMTP servers as far as
I know. So as much as I hate to say it, the only way you can use Eudora
is to find a different provider that offers either SLIP or PPP access,
or that uses POP and SMTP servers that Eudora could access via dialup
using the CommToolbox.

My intention is to establish some kind of a "Standard" for the connection of

machines and Suns in order to use E-Mail over the Internet. The user interface
should be as simple as MS Mail or so...
My specific questions about EUDORA are :
---------------------------------------
1. If I send an EUDORA mail message with a binhexed enclosure, can the
recipient manually debinhex the attachment in case she/he does not use a tool
like EUDORA ?
2. If EUDORA receives a message which includes a "manually" binhexed file will
the file automatically be debinhexed and filed on the Mac or PC ?
3. Is there a limit for the file size of a binary enclosure ?
4. Is it sufficient to install TCP/IP in the server only or do we have to
istall TCP/IP in the clients (Macs and PCs) too ?
5. Where do I find more info about TCP/IP for the PC (anonymous ftp site) ?
6. Any sugestions to use a different system than EUDORA ?

read in the promo, FTF Proactive sounded like a winner, and it was
exactly what I was looking for; FTF 3.0 with calendar!
FTF Proactive takes up 4Meg of disk space, and it's an application

slow!!! It takes 10-15 seconds to open up on my PB100, and I have

quite frustrating! It is worse than trying to run Word 5.1 on a SE.
But, what really bothers me is that the program is full of bugs.
The program quits cold when I try to open up "My FTF agenda" file

So, do NOT buy or upgrade to FTF Pro!!!

First, about receiving notices in the mail about FullWrite 2. We will
send notices to registered users when FullWrite 2 is available, but we
have a company policy not to send these notices out until a product
actually ships. Thus, when you receive an upgrade notice you know there
won't be any further slips in the schedule. We will also announce in this
forum when FullWrite 2 ships. We do not announce "golden master" ship
dates, etc. We also do not publicly announce our beta schedule. We can
say that the betas we've already sent out have gone well and we hope
the rest go as smoothly.
Second, the end of the first quarter is indeed fast approaching and we
are working at a rapid pace. However, we have decided that we must delay
the ship date past the end of this quarter. Our development schedule is
on track, but there's been more work required to bring FullWrite up to
our quality standards in some areas than we initially anticipated. We'd
rather delay the release slightly than leave some problems unaddressed.
At this point, we are not announcing an official shipping date.

Subject: High-speed Connect
I'd like to summarize the data I got about high-speed connection.
To remind people, I was attempting to use my Teleport Gold to
connect at high-speed (14.4k+) to a UNIX host. I was using White Knight.
1. I was told by a few people to make sure that the cable was a
hardware handshaking cable and it use the hardware handshake
if so. I have email out to Global Village to find out.
2. I was also told to set White Knight to speak at 19.2k rather than
38.4k. As an aside, I ended up using the init sequence
AT%C1\N2\Q3\J0\V1W1S112=11 to achieve the best results.
(I had been experimenting with this string rather than
using the settings in the Teleport Serial control panel).
It basically authorizes the modem to try to get the best it
can and to be verbose about the connection settings. The really
relevant part is setting register 112 equal to 11, the code that
says to use a DTE speed of 19.2k.
3. The last major piece of advice was to change the window size on
the ZMODEM by using the -w option on sz. I ended up using
sz -w 2048 <file list> to do my transfers.
What difference did it make? On a transfer of 860K, I received
no transmission errors and the efficiency was constant at about
83% (a throughput of about 12kbps). Before, I would get about
8%, so these changes gave me a factor of 10 improvement --
much more acceptable. :^)
Thanks again to all who responded. I appreciate it.

Subject: In praise of the HP Deskwriter 5.0 drivers
Last week I downloaded the new printer drivers for the HP DeskWriter series
(one size fits all, i.e. there's only one driver for the whole family, from
the plain B/W 510 through the one-cartridge DW C to the brand new color
560C -- the 310 is not in the list, though, it still has its own driver). I
installed them and tried them on my old DW C. I printed several types of
jobs with the new 5.0 driver and the old 3.0 one: a scanned photograph,
text with colors, business graphics. The results are impressive. In all
aspects of the printing process, the new driver is much better than the old
one:
- the colors are much more faithful and, with the color cartridge, the
black is blacker (!!);
- on the scanned photograph, there's much less banding and pixellization
(although I had set the 3.0 driver the recommended, non-default way for
printing photographs);
- on colored text and business graphics, areas of light colors print better
because, apparently, the driver uses randomly scattered dots rather than
geometric patterns; for the same reason, gradients are also much more
pleasant to the eye;
- the "ColorSmart" feature, which automatically determines the best
settings for each print job, works really well: you (at least I) never have
to go to the "options" dialog to manually set the intensity, halftoning
method and color matching;
- printing is faster, from the moment you click the "OK" button to the
moment you have the page in the hand, because the driver is faster; the
only slight problem is that, when ColorSmart is enabled, it may take some
time to analyze your job before spooling it to disk, especially on bitmaps;
- and status messages are back in HP Print Monitor!
Installation is a snap. Note that, if you have System 7 (and hence
TrueType), the contour fonts living in the "HP folder" are not used by the
driver and can be trashed; this frees about 1 Mb! Same with the "color
test" file.
Hooray to Hewlett-Packard! The 5.0 driver has revived my DeskWriter C.
Drivers are available via anonymous FTP from FTP-BOI.EXTERNAL.HP.COM in
file pub/printers/djet.pjet.dwriter/mac/dw50.hqx (976148 bytes).

I don't think this is particularly worth getting worked up
over. If you want 16 MB of RAM, buy another 8 MB separate when
you buy the Power Mac. It will often be cheaper than if you
bought it from Apple anyway. The same goes for the hard disk,
though it's a bit more of a pain to have two hard disks
sometimes (although at other times it's a godsend since you
don't have as many problems if one gives you trouble).

OK, I have the Mac. When I turn it on, I get the usual smiling Mac
icon, then the "Welcome to Macintosh" window. Next, along the bottom
I get an icon of a Mac with a disk in front of it, then to the right
of that I get a second icon. I can't really describe this icon because
it only appears for a fraction of a second before both icons disappear.
Then, where the "Welcome to Macontosh" once was, there is now a blank
white window against an otherwise greyish screen. The black borders of
this window is flashing as if it's in a perpetual state of redrawing
it. Across the top of the screen, there is a blank white bar but
there's nothing there to click on - no icon, no verbiage, just empty
white bar.
So that's all I have: a blank screen with a white window and a white bar
across the top. The arrow does indeed move in response to the mouse.
But, of course, there's nothing to click on.
Suggestions?

Subject: MountImage 1.2b2 and Mt.Image 1.0.2 (/info-mac/disk/)
MountImage 1.0.2 has been shown to corrupt files when they are read from a
mounted image file. The author of the control panel is:
Steve Christensen
America Online stevec44
CompuServe 76174,1712
Internet stevec@applelink.apple.com
Steve has requested, several times, that MountImage 1.2b2, be removed from
all public servers due to this deadly bug. Steve did not, in fact, release
MountImage 1.2b2 to the world, it was "leaked" by his beta testers.
MountImage 1.2b2 is DANGEROUS and should be removed from this and any other
archives...It's a bad penny that just keeps coming back! This action was
taken, at least twice, by the previous Info-Mac moderators.
The recently posted application Mt.Image by Yosuke "Basuke" Suzuki uses the
MountImage control panel (and therefore its driver) to mount .image files.
It therefore shares the same problems discussed above since it depends on
MountImage for its operation.
If you want a reliable way to mount .image files as desktop volumes then
use DiskDup+ 2.3.2 by Roger Bates, available in the archives. Turning on
the
image mounting capability will cost you no more than a phone call and $20
registration fee. Unlocking information is given over the phone at the
time of registration. Up-to-date version diskette and mailing is included
in $20 fee.
The usual disclaimers apply: I have not connection to Roger Bates except as
a satisfied customer. I use DiskDup+. I HAVE BEEN BURNED by MountImage. I
have confirmed the above statements by email with Steve Christensen who, by
the way, works for Apple and is the author of the popular and reliable
SuperClock as well as Apple's own DiskCopy (which creates the .image
files). In my mind, Steve is blameless in this matter...He has tried hard
to remove the MountImage 1.2b2 from public distribution.
Please feel free to post this in any edited form that you see fit. It
would probably have more impact coming from the moderators.

Subject: My own opinions
Hello all Macintosh fans,
I wanted to share some of my thoughts with you
concerning Apples
10th anniversary and the release of the PowerMacs. I have been
a
Macintosh user for almost 8 years now. It started when my dad
brought
home an SE. I had been using a variety of machines up until
then(Atari, Commodore, HP mainframe, etc..) for a variety of
reasons,
mostly games, but I got my programming start there also. Over
the
last 8 years I have grown to believe in no other machine, at
least for
myself. I will not fault other people for their personal
choices of
computers, but I firmly believe that the Macintosh is the best
all
around personal computer. In the last year I have started my
own
company and made an early decision to try and stick with all
Macintosh
hardware. We are primarily a graphics/animation shop, but
provide
general consulting services as well. Now, that you know a
little
about me, let me share with you some of my experiences(I am sure
these
will sound very similar to some of you as well).
First, I would like to make a blanket statement that
aside from
some Mac periodicals and this internet forum, I heard/saw NO
advertisement
about Mac's 10th anniversary! I know of a few people that said
they
saw some, but I did not. I was shocked, I saw this as a real
opportunity, especially with the future release of the
PowerMacs. All
kinds of goofy gimmicks come to mind, "We brought you the
future, now we
are going one step further!!!" Heck, even direct claims against
the
competition would be nice. Come on guys any business will tell
you
that advertising/marketing is kind of important!
Excited about getting my hands on a PowerMac, I visited
one of our
local super-computer warehouse styles stores. They had each of
the
PowerMacs all lined up nicer and neat(6100, 7100 & 8100). There
were
some people looking at them, and I quickly hopped on the
8100(dream
machine) for a test drive. Huh, what is this?? I don't
understand,
the machine had no software installed except the operating
system!!!
I was astonished, how did they expect to demo these machines
correctly
without software?? OK, so I tried the 7100 next. Ah ha! This
had
the CD from Apple with all kinds of cool demo software(Infini-d,
Fractal Paint designer, SoftWindows, etc..). I was fully aware
of the
performance of these native apps, I was interested in finding
out how
well Windows performed. Was it installed, of course not. I had
to
drag the archive onto the hard drive and uncompress it. After a
couple
minutes or tweaking, I got it running. I must say it was quite
impressive, to me at least. One last story about my visit.
There was
a gentleman there interested in the 8100, he asked a salesman
for
help. The salesman politely replied that he was not very
knowledgeable
on the Apple computer, but he would go get the "local Mac
expert". I
was impressed, they might actually be helpful. Ahh, this was
not to
happen, the local expert arrives and continues to totally
shatter any
hope I had of this retail chain actually helping Apple sell any
hardware. The customer asked a simply question, "I understand
that
this machine will run DOS software is that correct, and if so
how
does it do it?" Legitimate question I think to myself. I then
hear
the salesman enter into a long speech about how "the machine can
do it,
but it needs extra file-transferring software and probably a
network
hookup." My jaw hit the floor, but there was more yet! He then
proceeded to tell the customer that the machine had an "Intel
chip
inside" and that was how it could do it!!!! After I picked
myself off
of the floor, I calmly waited for the salesman to leave and then
pointedout a few of the 'small' errors that the salesman made.
I realize that some of the blame falls on the retail
chain, and
you can believe that I will be contacting them as well, but I
believe that Apple has a vested interest in these situations.
I worked for two years as an Apple student Rep at my university,
and I couldn't get away from the marketing/propaganda machine
>From
within the company. They need to turn that machine loose on the
general
public. I won't admit that I have any exact answers or know all
the
right approaches, but I do feel deeply that something needs to
be done.
The idea that Macintosh people are a small 'elite' group is
ridiculous.
We need to start breaking down some of the untruths that have
surroundedthis great machine for so many years. "There is more
software for the DOS
machines", "The DOS machines are cheaper", "The Mac is only good
for
games". We have heard all of these before, and they simply
aren't
true. I urge you to please take a larger role in promoting this
machine. Although I don't personally believe that we will see
the
demise of the Macintosh any time soon, it sure would be nice to
make
promoting this environment less of an uphill battle.
If anyone has any ideas/comments/stories to share please
do so.
If anyone has an "in" at Apple, please share that with us and
maybe we can take advantage of it. I would like to believe that
Apple
would be interested in hearing what we have to say. And please
visit
your local dealers, and see how they are treating the Macintosh
sales.
I can't expect any of my clients to buy a Macintosh if they hear
information like I heard.
Well, I hope this wasn't too long, but I had to get some
of this off of my chest. Thanks for your time, and I hope that
my soapbox wasn't too high.

Tim Onosko asks about connecting a 21" monochrome monitor and a 13"

My bad luck with the Quadra 840av continues. I won't waste bandwidth

I placed an order for the 840av last September.
This afternoon the Quadra 840av stopped working altogether. It was
acting strangely, complaining of memory problems, so I rebooted it.
It never came back. Instead I got a sad Mac with the following hex:

I suspect a bad SIMM. (I've tried just about everything else!) It
won't even boot from a floppy.
Has anyone seen this error? What does it mean?
The Quadra refuses to boot.
So I'm back to my trust Quadra 700. Hmmmm. Given all the trouble
with the 840av (and not a drop of trouble with the 700), maybe I'll
stay here! :-(

Subject: receiving files, etc.
Hi!
Hearty thanks go to those who responded to my query last week about receiving
files from Info-Mac. To summarise: The e-mail posts to Info-Mac that
contain an asterisk (*) next to the Subject: line are posts that had a file
attached when submitted to Info-Mac digest. These files were then
automatically stripped from the post and were placed in the archives where
they can be retrieved via anonymous ftp. The attached message is then added
to the digest.
My net connection allows me to connect at 19200bd if I wish, but files are
still transmitted at Kermit pace and I do not know how to figure that rate.
As it currently stands, my connecting software is Microsoft Works as it seems
the only one to support Kermit. Therefore, I will continue to receive
Info-Mac digest here @ AOL as e-mail for two reasons: 1) I can set a
FlashSession that logs off immediately upon completion of the download and 2)
MSWorks has a problem capturing all of the text to appear on the
screen--there are often large gaps between sections of text, making paging a
file useless.
Many people asked that question of me, and I thought the easiest way to reply
would be here. Also, this allows others to see the answer to the original
question, as seems to be fairly common practice.
Point 2: I understand that on dial-up access accounts for the Internet,
Fetch, TurboGopher and like programs do not function. These require a SLIP
account to operate. My question is this: Is(are) there programs that
operate in a similar fashion on dial-up accounts? Is this even possible
given the way TCP/IP operates on the Macintosh (or other platforms for that
matter)?
Thanx again for the help. Happy computing everyone.

Hello Everyone,
I hope someone out there can help me out. I am looking for a program called

Briefly, Scale allows you to drag a bunch of files onto it and it
automatically displays the cummulative logitical and physical size of the
bunch without you having to break out the calculator to add up the sizes of
all the individual files. This is immensely useful if you're trying to see
how many files in a group will fit onto a floppy disk.
I have searched high and low for this program and have come up with
nothing. Since I can't get Mr. Gibson to reply to me, would someone be kind
enough to point me in the right direction, or better yet, send me a copy of
the program (it's shareware)? Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jason Stone

Subject: si sound bug
hello netters.
as some of you might know since a long time there is a bug in the si
which sometimes (in fact regularly) causes the machine to stop playing
sounds. i've got an f-key which sets the volume to 6 and back to 1
which seems to reactivate the output - but it's still really annoying.
especially if you do lots of music on the mac like me.
has anyone got another solution, so mail me please.
thanks

Subject: Sound source re-direction from internal CD
Is it possible to re-direct audio direct from the internal CD's of standard
Mac's via the control panel ...
I'd like to attempt to sample direct from an audio CD into an app
supporting the standard audio source. The latest Sound control panel
(v8.0.1 from the System Update 2.0.1) offers a selection of Audio In/Out
options, but the internal CD does not appear ... is this only available
with AV mac's?
The hardware in question is Centris/Quadra 610's and 650's with
internal/external CD300's
Thanks for any help ...

It appears there is a problem with the stereo-maker Binhex
file. I have attempted to download it twice. I received a
Checksum error both times when using Binhex 5.0.

Subject: WriteNow 4.0 (Q)
Having waited what seems like forever for FullWrite to be upgraded, I'm
now seriously considering switching to WriteNow 4.0. Before I decide,
however, I'd like to ask a few things of you WriteNow users.
(1) How do you find WriteNow overall?
(2) Can one paste PICTs, etc., in the new tables of version 4.0?
(3) Can one adjust the amount of super- and subscripting (e.g. by points)?
(4) Can one super- and subscript a PICT, etc.
(5) Can WriteNow flow text around (irregular) objects?
(6) Does WriteNow suppoprt sidebars?
(7) Can WriteNow create indexes, TOCs, etc., and cross-reference?
(8) Does WriteNow have a (simple) draw module?
(9) Can WriteNow import EPS files?
(Items (3) & (4) are probably most important to me, since I often
have to adjust equations pasted in from Expressionist. ClarisWorks
apprently cannot do (3) & (4), which is why it can't replace FullWrite
for me.)
Thanks much for your help.
